Shettima criticizes Atiku and Obi on economic management and fuel subsidy
Vice President Kashim Shettima has targeted Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, claiming they lack the skills to manage Nigeria's economy effectively.

Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has intensified his criticism of presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that both lack the necessary capabilities to effectively manage the nation's economy. Shettima's remarks were made during the opening ceremony of the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit held in Abuja on Monday.
Shettima specifically addressed the contentious issue of fuel subsidies, asserting that Nigeria had acted as a 'Father Christmas' to neighboring African countries during the subsidy period. He highlighted the stark contrast in fuel prices between Nigeria and countries like Benin Republic, Niger, and Cameroon, stating, "The comparison is wide. Nigeria was Father Christmas for other African countries."
The Vice President did not hold back in his assessment of Atiku's proposals regarding fuel subsidies, suggesting that they reveal a lack of understanding necessary for governing a modern economy. He stated, "So he doesn’t have the skill set to govern a modern economy. That’s a painful truth."
In his critique of Peter Obi, Shettima acknowledged the former Anambra State governor's stance against restoring the petrol subsidy but dismissed his reliance on statistics as insufficient. "I respect Peter Obi for having the courage to say he’s not going to restore the petrol subsidy, but beyond spouting some statistics, Mr. Peter Obi has absolutely nothing to offer," Shettima remarked.
As the 2027 presidential election approaches, Shettima's comments reflect the growing tensions among the leading candidates and their differing views on economic management. The Vice President's remarks are likely to resonate with supporters who prioritize economic stability and effective governance in the upcoming election.
