The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) has raised serious allegations regarding the secret transfer of 68 detained Biafrans from Wawa Barracks to various correctional facilities, including those in Kuje, Keffi, and Suleja. This claim comes as the group accuses the Federal Government of manipulating the justice system to extend the detention of its members.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mazi Chris Nwaogu, the Head of IPoB's Directorate of State, expressed concern over the lack of progress in the legal proceedings surrounding the group's leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. According to Nwaogu, the Court of Appeal has not yet listed an appeal challenging Kanu's conviction, despite the necessary records being compiled and transmitted.

Nwaogu emphasized that the group's legal team is actively working to identify the 68 detainees and secure their release. He also highlighted a setback in a separate fundamental rights suit regarding Kanu's detention, which has been ongoing for 14 months following his discharge by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022. The presiding judge in this case reportedly announced that the court file was missing, further complicating the situation.

The IPoB spokesman criticized the legal basis for Kanu's conviction, which was handed down by Justice Omotosho on November 20, 2025. He argued that the judgment relied on a repealed law, citing Section 36(12) of the Nigerian Constitution, which stipulates that no one can be convicted of a criminal offense unless it is prescribed in written law.

In addition to these legal concerns, IPoB has distanced itself from an audio message circulating online that purportedly announced a return of the enforced Monday sit-at-home across the South-East region. Nwaogu clarified that neither the Directorate of State nor the High Command of the Eastern Security Network authorized such an action, urging residents to disregard the message to avoid any potential violence or disruption of economic activities.

Furthermore, the group has announced a phased political disengagement from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of its strategy leading up to the 2027 general elections. Supporters have been instructed to boycott APC activities, refrain from displaying the party's flags, and avoid defending APC governors. Nwaogu stated that this boycott is a response to what IPoB perceives as ongoing injustice and unlawful detention of its members.

While calling for Kanu's immediate and unconditional release, IPoB has urged the judiciary to expedite the hearing of the appeal and address the legal issues surrounding his conviction. The group has cautioned its supporters against resorting to violence and has warned politicians against exploiting the planned boycott for personal gain.
