Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, has sharply criticized former Anambra State governor Peter Obi during a town hall meeting in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State. Wike's remarks come as he prepares for the upcoming 2027 elections, where he is expected to play a significant role in the political landscape.

Wike's attack on Obi was multifaceted, targeting his public persona and governance record. He dismissed Obi as a candidate more suited for social media than for leading Nigeria, stating, "Truly speaking, I gave him president of social media. If you were to vote who will be president of social media, I will vote for him. But if it is to govern Nigeria, it's capital no!" This comment underscores Wike's belief that online popularity does not equate to effective leadership.

In a bid to highlight what he perceives as Obi's shortcomings, Wike characterized the former governor's frugality as a negative trait. He remarked, "As a former Governor, you cannot be stingy to the point of not having a Personal Assistant who will carry your bag. You want to show you carry your bag. We don't want such a stingy person as a president." This statement was aimed at questioning Obi's capability to manage the nation's resources effectively.

Wike also urged the public to evaluate Obi's tenure by comparing it with the performance of the current Anambra governor, Chukwuma Soludo. He implied that Soludo's administration would provide a clearer picture of Obi's contributions during his time in office.

A significant portion of Wike's address focused on alleged financial mismanagement under previous administrations in Rivers State. He claimed that a staggering $39 million (approximately 53 billion naira) was allocated to the Justice Karibi-Whyte Specialist Hospital project, yet no construction had commenced. Wike also raised concerns about a monorail project, alleging that around N60 billion was spent with minimal results.

Further, he claimed that during his tenure, he discovered only $308,000 remaining from a $308 million deal regarding the sale of a gas turbine. Wike criticized a proposed $10 million expenditure for fumigating the state, questioning the logic of such spending given the state's geographical context.

In addition to his criticisms of Obi, Wike expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 elections approach. He also criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket and expressed reservations about former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, citing their shared history in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike's remarks reflect a broader strategy as he aligns with the Rainbow Coalition, a political alliance aimed at fostering unity among various political factions in Rivers State. The coalition is set to announce its candidates on October 27, with Kingsley Chinda expected to be the gubernatorial candidate for Rivers State. This coalition aims to reduce political tensions and bring together members from both the APC and PDP, showcasing Wike's commitment to a more collaborative political environment in the state.
