Manpower Shortage Linked to Inmate Escape During Court Appearance in Edo
An inmate's escape during a court appearance in Edo highlights critical staffing issues in the Nigerian Correctional Service.

A significant manpower shortage within the Nigerian Correctional Service has been identified as a key factor in the escape of Osita Thomas, a 28-year-old awaiting trial inmate, during a recent court appearance in Edo State. This incident raises serious concerns regarding the safety and security of correctional facilities across the country.
According to an anonymous official from the Nigeria Correctional Service, the officer responsible for escorting Thomas and other inmates to court was unable to pursue the fleeing inmate due to the risk of leaving other inmates unattended. The official emphasized the urgent need for recruitment to bolster personnel numbers, warning that without immediate action, similar incidents could occur in the future.
“The warden couldn’t leave other inmates to pursue Osita, as he would risk losing others. The dearth of manpower should be addressed now so that this kind of incident does not happen again,” the official stated.
The situation is compounded by the impending retirement of over 1,000 personnel from the correctional service this year, with no current plans in place to recruit replacements. This has raised alarms within the system, as the existing workforce is already stretched thin. However, there is a glimmer of hope as the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board convened recently to initiate recruitment efforts aimed at alleviating the staffing crisis.
The Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed the escape of Thomas, who was being held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Auchi while awaiting trial for charges of conspiracy and theft. Aminu Suleman, the command’s Public Relations Officer, stated that efforts are currently underway to recapture the escaped inmate.
“No update yet but efforts are ongoing to apprehend the inmate,” Suleman said in a telephone conversation with a correspondent on Friday.
The escape of Thomas not only highlights the challenges faced by the Nigerian Correctional Service but also underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and adequate staffing to ensure the safety of both inmates and the public. As the situation develops, the authorities are under pressure to address these critical issues to prevent future occurrences.
