Macron denounces deadly shooting in Paris suburbs as a racist terrorist attack
A gunman opened fire in Trappes, killing one and injuring five, including a child.

A tragic shooting incident in the Paris suburb of Trappes has left one person dead and five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl who was shot multiple times. French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the attack as a "racist terrorist attack," highlighting the targeted nature of the violence against individuals of foreign origin.
The shooting occurred on Friday morning when a gunman, identified as a 39-year-old man, opened fire from his vehicle. The attack, which took place around 10:30 AM local time, was described by Trappes' mayor, Ali Rabeh, as an act aimed at causing mass casualties. Rabeh stated that the shooter was "firing at random, wanting to cause a bloodbath" as he drove through Trappes and the neighboring town of La Verriere.
Among the victims, the girl who was shot eight times is reported to be in stable condition, while another injured individual is in critical condition. The mayor of La Verriere, Nicolas Dainville, confirmed that many of the victims were of foreign descent, with one of the deceased being of African origin. This has led local officials to suspect that the shooting was motivated by racism and possibly Islamophobia.
In response to the attack, French authorities have launched an investigation for "murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise." The police apprehended the shooter in Coignieres, where he was found with a submachine gun and tear-gas grenades. Additionally, his apartment was reportedly booby-trapped with gas canisters and electric wires connected to a timer.
Laurent Nunez, the French interior minister, visited the affected areas and characterized the shooting as a "clearly a terrorist crime." The incident has raised concerns among residents, many of whom expressed fear for their safety, particularly those of North African descent. One resident, Adel, shared his distress, stating, "I’m north African and it’s frightening for everyone who has the same background."
This shooting comes at a time when France is already on high alert following recent riots related to protests over the rising cost of living. As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this violent act, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu emphasized the seriousness of the situation and assured that all resources of the security forces and judiciary would be mobilized.
Macron has reached out to the victims' families, stating that "the nation is standing with" those affected by this "terrible ordeal." As investigations continue, the country braces for potential unrest amid ongoing protests, with heightened police presence expected in the coming days.
