United Nigeria Airlines has announced plans to commence cargo flight operations from Ekiti Airport in January 2027. This development is expected to significantly enhance market access for local farmers and businesses, allowing them to transport goods to wider markets across Nigeria and potentially internationally.

The announcement was made by the airline's Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, during the commissioning of a new aviation fuel tank farm at the airport. Okonkwo highlighted that the cargo service would enable businesses to send their products to various destinations, with London being mentioned as a prospective international market. However, he noted that the launch of this service would depend on the readiness of the state and the necessary arrangements with the airline.

In addition to cargo flights, United Nigeria Airlines plans to introduce daily passenger flights to and from Ekiti, although a specific start date for these services has yet to be announced. The airline's commitment to this partnership comes at a time when Ekiti is working on upgrading its airport facilities, with the aim of completing these enhancements by the end of 2026.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who attended the commissioning event, assured that the state government is dedicated to supporting the airport's development, including ongoing upgrades to the Instrument Landing System and ground lighting projects, which are expected to cost over ₦10 billion. These improvements will facilitate round-the-clock operations, allowing airlines greater flexibility in scheduling flights.

Okonkwo also emphasized that United Nigeria Airlines did not engage in any lobbying or bribery to secure this partnership, stating that the state government approached the airline based on its operational capabilities and fleet. He expressed confidence in the collaboration, noting that the airline has previously made sacrifices, such as accepting lower passenger numbers during off-peak seasons, to support the partnership.

The airline is recognized as Nigeria's second-largest consumer of aviation fuel, following Air Peace, and its expanding operations are anticipated to bolster demand at the newly established fuel facility at the airport.

As the January 2027 target for cargo operations approaches, businesses in Ekiti are optimistic about the opportunities that will arise from improved logistics and access to broader markets. The completion of airport upgrades and the introduction of passenger flights will further enhance the region's connectivity and economic prospects, setting the stage for a transformative period for Ekiti's aviation sector.
