A tragic incident unfolded in the Diema community of Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, where a 29-year-old youth leader, known as Tari or Heavyweight, was killed during a violent clash between rival factions. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over land earmarked for a crude oil tank farm by an unidentified oil company.

Tari, hailing from Opu-Nembe (Bassambiri) in the Nembe Local Government Area, was affiliated with a youth group loyal to His Highness Ingo Ikele, the Amayanabo of Diema-Brass. Sources indicate that the conflict erupted when Ikele directed his supporters to inspect a parcel of land for the proposed oil facility. This action was met with resistance from another faction aligned with His Highness Baratuaipre Amaene, a rival traditional ruler in the community.

The disagreement escalated quickly, leading to a violent confrontation. During the clash, Tari sustained severe machete injuries, which ultimately resulted in his death. Eyewitness accounts suggest that he was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with DSP Musa Mohammed, the spokesperson, stating that efforts have been made to restore normalcy in the area. He also mentioned that an investigation is underway to ascertain the details surrounding the violent clash.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning land ownership and the interests of oil companies. Community leaders are calling for peace and dialogue to prevent further violence as the investigation continues.
