The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Etimbuk Daniel, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who passed away at the Awgu Orientation Camp in Enugu State. This development comes after concerns were raised regarding the medical care provided to Daniel at the camp clinic.

NAFDAC officials have already visited the orientation camp, where they collected samples of medications administered to Daniel and interviewed medical personnel involved in his treatment. The agency's investigation follows reports that suggested Daniel's death may have been linked to substandard or falsified medications. However, NAFDAC has firmly rejected these claims.

In a statement released on October 19, 2026, NAFDAC's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that preliminary findings indicated Daniel was admitted to the camp clinic on the evening of October 7 with symptoms consistent with severe malaria. It was also noted that he had a history of peptic ulcer disease. Medical staff stabilized him with an intramuscular antimalarial drug and intravenous fluids before discharging him the following morning with oral medications.

However, Daniel returned to the clinic on October 10, experiencing severe pain in his right thigh and exhibiting signs of distress, including heavy sweating and dangerously low blood pressure. Despite efforts to stabilize him with intravenous fluids, his condition deteriorated, leading to a transfer to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku-Ozalla, where he ultimately went into a coma and could not be resuscitated.

The agency reported that a friend of Daniel's informed the clinic staff that he had been vomiting for two days prior to his second visit, a detail that was not known to the medical team at the time. NAFDAC suggested that the cause of death was likely acute kidney injury resulting from severe dehydration and shock. Notably, the same medications given to Daniel were used to treat other corps members at the camp, all of whom recovered without incident.

In addition to NAFDAC's investigation, the Nigerian Senate has also taken an interest in the case. Following a motion raised by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East, the Senate has ordered a separate investigation into Daniel's death and the overall medical services provided at NYSC orientation camps across the country.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio's media aide, Anietie Ekong, confirmed the Senate's decision to probe the matter, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of health services at these camps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As investigations continue, NAFDAC has not yet released any laboratory test results, and the situation remains under close scrutiny as both agencies work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of Etimbuk Daniel.
