Osun Police Promote Mental Health Awareness Among Officers
In a bid to enhance service delivery, the Osun State Police Command has organized a mental health awareness lecture for its officers.

The Osun State Police Command has taken a significant step towards promoting the mental well-being of its officers by organizing a mental health awareness lecture. This initiative, which coincided with the observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10, aims to foster psychological resilience and enhance effective service delivery among the police force.
The details of the lecture were shared in a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi. The programme was designed to raise awareness about the critical role mental health plays in policing, especially given the high-stress nature of police work, which often involves exposure to challenging situations, security threats, and emergency responses.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dr) Iyiola Ogundimite, who heads the Police Hospital in Osun State, emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental health among officers. She pointed out that maintaining good mental health is vital for sound judgment, professionalism, and effective decision-making in the line of duty. "Good mental health is essential for sound judgment, professionalism, effective decision-making, and respectful engagement with members of the public," she stated.
The guest lecturer, psychiatrist Dr. T. Ayantola from the Federal Psychiatric Hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State, addressed various strategies for managing stress. He highlighted the significance of adequate rest, fostering healthy relationships, and the value of peer support in identifying psychological distress early. Officers were encouraged to support one another and to avoid stigmatizing colleagues who may be facing mental health challenges.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, underscored the necessity of mental health as a crucial component of police welfare. He remarked that officers who are mentally and emotionally stable are better equipped to fulfill their constitutional duties while respecting the human rights of citizens. Zungura urged his officers to adopt healthy coping mechanisms and maintain a proper work-life balance to enhance their overall well-being.
The Osun State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the physical, psychological, and emotional health of its personnel, recognizing that such measures are essential for enhancing public safety and service delivery.
