The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced the successful restoration of the national grid after a significant disturbance on the 330-kilovolt transmission network that occurred on October 19, 2026. This incident led to a dramatic decrease in electricity generation, plummeting from 3,840 megawatts to approximately 477 megawatts, raising alarms about the stability of the country's power supply.

The disturbance began around 12:40 PM and affected only a portion of the grid, contrary to widespread speculation of a nationwide collapse. In a statement released by NISO, the organization clarified that it collaborated with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to stabilize the system and restore normal operations swiftly.

NISO's statement emphasized, "The Nigerian Independent System Operator wishes to inform the public that at approximately 12:40 hours on Monday, 19 October 2026, the national grid experienced multiple trippings on the 330kV transmission network. Following the incident, NISO, working with TCN, immediately implemented appropriate corrective measures to stabilise the power system and restore normal operations. Restoration efforts have been successfully completed, and the national grid has returned to normal operation."

Despite the rapid recovery, the incident highlighted the vulnerabilities within Nigeria's electricity infrastructure, as several major power plants, including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro, and Kainji, reported zero output during the peak of the disturbance. By 1:23 PM, the real-time generation reading indicated a mere 480 megawatts being supplied to the grid.

The operator urged the public to rely on official communications for updates and to disregard unverified reports circulating in the media. An official from NISO stated, "There is no disturbance at the moment. Probably if something is happening, maybe it is a local issue, but there is nothing on the grid. Some of these things are tripping or other minor issues that, within minutes, you just see that it is fixed."

This latest incident comes amid ongoing challenges in Nigeria's electricity sector, where disturbances have frequently disrupted supply to homes and businesses. The federal government is actively working to enhance the country's transmission capacity, recently approving plans to develop new eastern and western power grids aimed at improving reliability and addressing recurring failures.

The interconnected nature of Nigeria's electricity supply system means that a fault in transmission can trigger protective measures, leading to reduced electricity delivery. The 330kV network is a vital component of Nigeria's high-voltage transmission infrastructure, responsible for transporting bulk electricity from generating stations to distribution networks.

As the nation continues to grapple with power supply issues, NISO remains committed to maintaining grid stability and ensuring reliable operations across the national electricity transmission system. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through NISO's official website for the latest updates on the power situation.
