In response to the recent crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in the Igbokoda River, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered immediate fumigation of the river and the distribution of health kits to local residents. The crash, which occurred on October 5, resulted in the loss of all 25 individuals on board, prompting urgent action to address environmental and health concerns.

Residents near the crash site have reported a growing offensive odor emanating from the river, raising fears of contamination and potential disease outbreaks. In light of these concerns, Governor Aiyedatiwa directed the Ministries of Environment and Health to conduct thorough fumigation of the area. This initiative aims to mitigate health risks associated with decomposing remains and spilled aviation fuel.

The governor's directive, announced in a statement from the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, also includes provisions for water tankers to supply clean drinking water to the community if the river is deemed unsafe for use. The Igbokoda River is a vital resource for the residents, serving as a key source of livelihood and daily sustenance.

As recovery operations continue, the local traditional ruler, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has called on both state and federal authorities to expedite the recovery efforts and address the contamination issues at the crash site. The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, which was on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos, crashed in a swampy area, complicating recovery efforts due to the challenging terrain.

The retrieval of victims' remains and wreckage has been slow, with the aircraft submerged beneath the water. To assist in the recovery, the state government has deployed specialized amphibious machines to aid the Nigerian Navy, Air Force, and local divers involved in the operation. A 12-member board of inquiry has also been established by the Nigerian Air Force to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Governor Aiyedatiwa previously confirmed that no survivors were found in the aftermath of the incident, as emergency responders, security personnel, and local residents scoured the crash site without locating any signs of life. The community continues to grapple with the tragedy as officials work to ensure the safety and health of the affected residents.
