US President Donald Trump has openly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following a major drone attack by Ukrainian forces on Russian energy infrastructure in Saint Petersburg. This attack comes despite Trump's requests for Ukraine to refrain from striking Russian oil facilities, highlighting a growing rift between the two leaders.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his concerns that such deep strikes into Russian territory could jeopardize ongoing peace negotiations. He emphasized that he does not wish to alienate Moscow from the bargaining table and accused Zelensky of resisting efforts aimed at concluding the conflict.

The situation intensified after Trump signed an executive order that waived Congressional economic sanctions against Russia. This move has drawn sharp criticism from Zelensky, who warned during an appearance on NBC's Meet the Press that the lifting of sanctions could bolster Russia's military capabilities. He characterized any potential alignment of the US with Russia as a “historic mistake.”

The drone attack on the Saint Petersburg Oil Terminal, a significant hub for Baltic oil exports with a capacity exceeding 12 million tons annually, resulted in substantial fires affecting both the terminal and surrounding logistics centers. In response, Russia's Defense Ministry reported that it intercepted over 1,000 drones across various regions, indicating the scale and seriousness of the conflict.

Despite the increasing tensions, Zelensky confirmed that he remains in contact with US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss potential diplomatic frameworks. He reiterated Ukraine's commitment to pursuing a sustainable peace agreement, suggesting that dialogue continues even amidst military escalations.

Additionally, diplomatic officials in both Washington and Moscow have acknowledged preliminary discussions about a potential trilateral meeting involving Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This meeting could signal a new phase in international diplomatic efforts concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

As the situation develops, the implications of these military actions and diplomatic exchanges will likely have significant impacts on the geopolitical landscape in the region.
