Nigeria's pension assets surge to ₦31.48 trillion as reforms take effect
The National Pension Commission reports significant growth in pension assets and benefits.

Nigeria's pension assets have reached an impressive ₦31.48 trillion, marking a substantial increase as the National Pension Commission (PenCom) implements reforms aimed at enhancing retirement benefits and reducing delays in payments. The surge in assets comes alongside the enrollment of 938,229 new participants into the Contributory Pension Scheme.
During the 2026 PenCom Media Conference held in Abuja, the Director General, Omolola Oloworaran, highlighted that the ongoing reforms are yielding positive results for pensioners. She noted that the Pension Boost 1.0 initiative has successfully increased monthly pensions for over 241,000 retirees, with total monthly payments rising from ₦12.15 billion to ₦14.83 billion—an increase of ₦2.68 billion. Some beneficiaries have seen cumulative increases of up to 100 percent following recent adjustments.
In a historic move, pensioners under the defunct Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund received their first benefit review in 21 years, resulting in a staggering 1,173 percent increase in their payments. Additionally, Oloworaran reported that ₦8.7 billion in outstanding arrears has been cleared for 2,116 retirees under this scheme.
To address long-standing pension debts, the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, approved a ₦758 billion intervention bond, enabling the settlement of inherited pension liabilities. This initiative has benefited 957,045 individuals, including retirees who had faced years of unpaid entitlements.
PenCom has introduced a zero waiting time policy, ensuring that federal retirees start receiving their pensions immediately after leaving service. Furthermore, the processing time for retirement benefit approvals has been significantly reduced from 21 months to just 48 hours, streamlining the experience for retirees.
Starting January 1, 2026, an Exit Benefit Scheme will provide qualifying employees from treasury-funded ministries, departments, and agencies with an additional payment equivalent to their total annual emoluments, provided they have at least 10 years of qualifying service. The first 175 retirees under this scheme received approximately ₦1.1 billion in August.
PenCom is also set to launch PenCare, a healthcare initiative aimed at offering essential services at no cost to eligible low-income retirees, with a pilot phase targeting 30,000 beneficiaries. Additionally, a Minimum Pension Guarantee is in the pipeline for eligible retirees under the contributory scheme.
The growth in pension assets, which increased from ₦20.79 trillion in July 2024 to ₦31.48 trillion in June 2026, reflects the commission's commitment to expanding coverage and improving service delivery. Oloworaran emphasized the importance of compliance, warning employers against deducting contributions without remitting them to workers' Retirement Savings Accounts, a practice she described as a breach of trust and the law. Recoveries from defaulting employers have reached ₦36.6 billion as of July 2026.
To further promote awareness and inclusion in the pension sector, the inaugural National Pension Week is scheduled for October 26 to 30, aiming to enhance retirement planning among Nigerians. Oloworaran assured stakeholders of PenCom's dedication to stronger regulation and improved service delivery to ensure that workers and retirees receive their entitlements promptly.
