Germany has introduced a new online application system for selected long-stay visas, making it easier for eligible individuals to apply from anywhere in the world. This initiative, announced by the German Embassy on their X handle, allows applicants to complete their applications and submit necessary documents before scheduling an appointment with the relevant German mission.

The online service is available through the Consular Services Portal at digitaldiplo.de/visa. It is specifically designed for certain national visa categories, which include student visas, EU Blue Cards, vocational training visas, and family reunification visas. This new procedure is aimed at those intending to stay in Germany for more than 90 days.

To utilize the portal, applicants must first select their destination country, the appropriate German mission, and the visa category that applies to them. After filling out the online application form, they are required to upload all necessary supporting documents. Once submitted, applicants should keep an eye on feedback from consular authorities, as they may need to make corrections or provide additional information before their applications can advance.

After the initial review, applicants will receive instructions on how to schedule an appointment with the relevant German mission. However, it is crucial to note that not all visa categories are eligible for this online application process. Individuals must verify that their intended visa type can be processed online to avoid any confusion.

For those planning to visit Germany for 90 days or less, including for tourism, family visits, or short business trips, the standard Schengen visa application process remains in effect. The new long-stay portal is strictly for selected national visa applications and should not be confused with the procedures for short-term visits.

Prospective travellers are encouraged to thoroughly check the requirements and procedures outlined by the relevant German embassy or consulate before initiating their applications. Ensuring the correct visa category is selected and all required documents are provided will help minimize delays in processing.

This online application process is a significant step towards modernizing the visa application system, allowing eligible applicants to navigate the initial stages of their visa applications with greater ease and efficiency.
