David Chukwudifu, the Anambra chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed serious concerns regarding the party's internal divisions, claiming they could jeopardize the chances of their presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the upcoming 2027 elections. Chukwudifu's remarks come amid allegations that Obi has been neglecting communication with party executives since joining the NDC in May 2026.

In an interview published by The Punch on October 11, Chukwudifu stated that Obi's lack of engagement with the party leadership raises doubts about the NDC's ability to secure votes in Anambra. He accused Obi of avoiding meetings with him and other South-East chairmen, which he believes is detrimental to the party's unity and electoral strategy.

Chukwudifu noted that despite multiple attempts to reach out to Obi through phone calls and WhatsApp messages, he received no response. He claimed that since Obi's arrival in the NDC, he has not met with any of the party's South-East leaders, leading to a growing sense of frustration among the ranks.

The NDC chairman further criticized a faction within the party, alleging that individuals who transitioned with Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC have been running party activities independently. This group is reportedly conducting screenings, selling nomination forms, and holding primaries without the involvement of the official state structures, a situation Chukwudifu described as concerning.

"People from Labour and APGA are the ones running the affairs of the party, as far as I can see," he stated, emphasizing that this lack of coordination could severely impact the party's performance in the elections.

When asked about the NDC's prospects in Anambra, Chukwudifu was candid, stating, "I do not think we can win any ward in Anambra state, let alone a local government or the state, for Peter Obi if we continue in this direction." He acknowledged that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which has dominated Anambra politics for nearly 24 years, remains a formidable opponent, further complicating the NDC's electoral ambitions.

Chukwudifu's comments come in the wake of Obi's previous denial of sidelining party executives during a chance encounter with a local government chairman. Obi had directed the chairman to consult with Senator Tony Nwoye, who later disputed the legitimacy of the chairman's role within the party. Amid these tensions, Chukwudifu's faction has taken steps to establish its own office, as Obi's group has been operating from hotels.

As the 2027 elections approach, the internal strife within the NDC raises significant questions about the party's ability to present a united front and effectively campaign for Obi in Anambra.
