Pilot hailed as hero after NAF plane crash near Igbokoda saves community
Residents credit pilot for averting a larger tragedy during recent crash.

A pilot is being hailed as a hero by residents of Igbokoda after he reportedly maneuvered a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft away from the town, preventing a potential disaster during a tragic crash that claimed 32 lives on October 5, 2026. The aircraft, identified by its tail number NGR 931, was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when it encountered difficulties and ultimately went down in a swamp approximately 200 meters from the community.
Witnesses described the scene as harrowing, with one local fisherman recalling the chilling sound of the aircraft's engine as it struggled to stay airborne. "It sounded like the engine was coughing blood," he said, noting that the aircraft appeared to be in distress long before it crashed. Residents believe that had the pilot not fought to control the aircraft, the outcome could have been catastrophic, resulting in numerous casualties within the densely populated town.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa visited the crash site and echoed the sentiments of the community, stating that the pilot's actions likely saved many lives. "The pilot managed to maneuver the aircraft away from the community before it landed in the swamp," he said, describing the crash site as a "very gory sight" filled with debris, body parts, and military uniforms floating in the water.
Despite ongoing recovery efforts, the main fuselage of the aircraft has not yet been located, seven days after the incident. Divers from the Navy and local volunteers have been searching the swamp, but only small fragments of the aircraft have been retrieved. The Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, expressed concern over the challenging conditions, stating that the wreckage is deeply submerged in the mud, complicating recovery efforts.
The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that the crucial flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box, remains unrecovered, leaving many questions about the crash unanswered. Air Vice Marshal Ebimobo Ebiowe emphasized the importance of locating the black box, as it holds vital information for investigators. A high-level investigation has been ordered, involving both military and civilian aviation safety experts.
In the aftermath of the crash, the community is grappling with the loss of 32 lives while simultaneously honoring the pilot's sacrifice. Residents have expressed their gratitude, stating that he chose to take the aircraft down in a less populated area, thereby sparing many others. "He should be celebrated in death for saving us from catastrophe," one resident remarked.
As recovery efforts continue, the Navy has deployed side-scan sonar equipment to assist in locating the submerged fuselage, while concerns about pollution from leaking aviation fuel have also arisen. The tragic incident has left a deep mark on Igbokoda, where the memory of that fateful day will linger, especially during the quiet drizzles that now evoke the sound of the sky screaming overhead.
