Burna Boy's ₦50m Murals Unveiled at New School in Rivers State, Sparking Debate
A new secondary school in Rivers State features ₦50 million murals of Burna Boy, igniting mixed reactions online.

A striking set of murals featuring Afrobeats star Burna Boy has been unveiled at the newly constructed Odiokwu Community Secondary School in Ahoada West Local Government Area, Rivers State. The artwork, valued at ₦50 million, was showcased by social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) ahead of the school's commissioning scheduled for October 10, 2026.
The murals, which depict Burna Boy alongside children and members of the project team, were commissioned as part of a larger initiative that includes a clinic, with the entire project costing approximately ₦250 million. VDM shared a video on his Instagram account, expressing his enthusiasm for the artwork and emphasizing the importance of celebrating local talent. He stated, "We paid 50 million naira for this mural and graffiti of @burnaboygram and the kids, myself and that of @winnie820 @imb.crew. I love what you guys did here, money well spent… I LOVE IT!"
The commissioning event will not only highlight the murals but also include a football match between Ahoada West and Ahoada East, further engaging the community in the celebrations. VDM underscored the significance of the murals, explaining that they serve as an inspiration for the children in the community, reminding them that a Grammy Award-winning artist hails from their hometown, which can motivate them to pursue their own dreams.
However, the unveiling of the murals has sparked a mixed response on social media. While many praised Burna Boy's generosity and the project's impact on local education and health, others questioned the decision to prominently feature the artist's image in the school setting. Critics have raised concerns about the appropriateness of such a high-profile representation in a learning environment, suggesting that the focus should be more on educational values rather than celebrity culture.
Despite the divided opinions, the initiative has been recognized as a significant contribution to the community, providing essential facilities that can enhance the quality of education and healthcare for residents. The construction of the school and clinic was managed by Fego Works Limited, with VDM taking a leading role in overseeing the project.
As the commissioning day approaches, the community is abuzz with anticipation, eager to see the new facilities and celebrate the achievements of one of their own. The event promises to be a landmark occasion, blending education, sports, and local pride in a celebration of growth and opportunity for the youth of Ahoada West.
