Domestic air travellers in Nigeria are facing significant challenges as reports of flight delays and cancellations escalate. Many passengers have expressed their frustration over the mounting waiting times and disrupted travel plans, leading to crowded departure halls at airports nationwide.

Recent observations at major airports, including the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja, highlight the growing dissatisfaction among travellers. On a visit to Lagos's domestic terminal, numerous passengers were seen anxiously waiting for updates on their delayed flights, with some visibly stressed by the situation.

Eze, a passenger travelling from Lagos to Abuja, shared his experience of repeated delays. "My flight was delayed while I was going to Abuja from Lagos. It was delayed as I am returning. I am stressed, honestly. And I am not alone. Delay announcements are many, about four in two hours today. Terrible," he lamented.

Another traveller, Jeremiah, faced a similar predicament when his flight from Warri to Lagos was rescheduled. He was forced to incur additional expenses due to the disruption, stating, "I had to part away with another money after my flight scheduled for 5pm on Sunday was shifted to the next day. I needed to be in Lagos by 9am on Monday because I had an important meeting to attend."

Social media has also been a platform for passengers to voice their grievances. A recent post from a traveller named Segalink on X, formerly Twitter, detailed a frustrating experience with Air Peace. He recounted how his flight from Asaba to Lagos, initially scheduled for 3:00 PM, faced multiple delays due to alleged maintenance issues, forcing many passengers to spend the night at the airport in hopes of boarding their flight, only to be informed of further delays until nearly 9 AM the following day.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reported alarming statistics regarding domestic flight disruptions. In August alone, domestic airlines recorded 4,801 disruptions out of 7,961 flights operated. Air Peace, in particular, had the highest number of disruptions, with 1,337 delayed or cancelled flights out of 1,864 operated. Other airlines, including United Nigeria Airlines and Enugu Air, also reported significant numbers of disruptions.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of flight disruptions, airline representatives have defended their operations, claiming that many of the delays are due to factors beyond their control. This ongoing issue raises concerns about the reliability of air travel in Nigeria, as passengers continue to endure long waits and uncertainty regarding their travel plans.

As the situation persists, it remains to be seen how airlines and regulatory bodies will address these challenges to restore confidence in domestic air travel for Nigerian passengers.
