The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared an indefinite strike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), effective from Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This action comes in response to unresolved issues regarding the promotion and career progression of teachers in Abuja, following a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The decision to strike was announced after the NLC deemed the FCTA's response to their demands as inadequate. In a statement released by Comrade Knabayi S. Adalo, the Chairman of the NLC FCT Council, the union criticized the FCTA's reply as "ambiguous, dismissive and totally unacceptable." The union had initially called for the resolution of long-standing welfare disputes affecting teachers in the region on September 8, 2026.

Central to the conflict is the FCTA's implementation of a "vacancy clause" that ties teacher promotions to the availability of vacancies. The NLC contends that this policy is inappropriate for teachers, who are specifically recruited by the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB). The union argues that teachers should not be subjected to the same promotion criteria as core civil servants or pool staff, as this has resulted in significant career stagnation and low morale among educators.

The NLC's action reflects a growing frustration among teachers regarding their treatment and the lack of adequate responses from the FCTA. As the strike begins, the impact on educational services in Abuja is expected to be significant, with teachers halting their activities until their demands are addressed.

The union's insistence on fair treatment and career progression for teachers highlights the ongoing challenges within the education sector in Nigeria, where issues of welfare and professional development remain critical. The NLC has called on the FCTA to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve these disputes and restore normalcy in the educational system of the FCT.
