Rio Ferdinand urges Portugal coach to apologize to Ronaldo amid controversy
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called for an apology from Portugal's coach Jorge Jesus to Cristiano Ronaldo following a recent dispute.

Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United legend, has issued a stern warning to Portugal's national team manager, Jorge Jesus, suggesting that he could face dismissal unless he publicly apologizes to Cristiano Ronaldo. This call for accountability comes in light of a recent incident during the UEFA Nations League fixtures that has created significant tension between the veteran striker and the national team management.
The controversy began when Ronaldo, 41, was asked to warm up for an extended period but was ultimately left on the bench during a crucial match. Feeling disrespected by the treatment, Ronaldo engaged in discussions with both Jesus and the President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença, before choosing to leave the national team camp.
Ferdinand addressed the situation on his podcast, emphasizing the importance of maintaining harmony within the team, especially when it involves a player of Ronaldo's stature. He stated, "The coach has to come out and apologize... otherwise, he's eventually going to get sacked. He has to say publicly, 'Listen, I got this situation wrong.'"
Despite the mounting pressure from fans and former players alike, Jorge Jesus has remained steadfast in his position, refusing to issue a direct apology. He defended his decision-making, asserting, "I don't apologise to anyone. The problem that started all of this was that the player was warming up. I made the decision. What do I have to apologise for?" He further asserted his authority, stating, "I am the manager, and I call up whomever I want. I do not consult anyone about the players I wish to select or who will play."
In an attempt to mitigate the escalating tensions, FPF President Pedro Proença has stepped in to mediate the situation. While Jesus has left the possibility open for Ronaldo's future inclusion in the squad, he noted that this would depend on the player's form at his club, Al-Nassr. Reports indicate that Ronaldo has set specific conditions regarding his international future under the current management, creating uncertainty about his role moving forward.
As Portugal prepares to face Denmark in November, having already secured qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals, the ongoing discord surrounding their captain's status remains a focal point of discussion. The outcome of this situation could have significant implications not only for Ronaldo's international career but also for the stability of the national team under Jorge Jesus's leadership.
