The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a strong call for the Federal Government to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s security framework while also addressing the escalating costs of food and transportation. This appeal comes in response to the growing pressures of insecurity and the rising cost of living that are affecting everyday Nigerians.

During the recent General Assembly held in Abuja, the NSCIA underscored the need for swift and effective government intervention. The communiqué, which was signed by the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, along with Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, emphasized that the current economic challenges necessitate immediate action.

The Council specifically advocated for a reform of Nigeria’s security architecture, endorsing the concept of decentralized policing. However, they stressed that such measures must be grounded in professionalism and constitutional safeguards to ensure accountability and respect for fundamental rights. Effective coordination between federal and state security agencies was also highlighted as crucial for the success of these reforms.

In addition to security concerns, the NSCIA urged the government to expedite efforts to alleviate the financial burdens faced by citizens. The Council stated, "The Federal Government should expedite action on drastically reducing the cost of transportation and food to alleviate the hardship being faced by ordinary Nigerians."

The assembly also addressed issues regarding religious rights, particularly the rights of Muslim women in educational and professional settings. The NSCIA criticized several universities, including the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University, for what it termed hostile attitudes towards Supreme Court rulings that support the use of hijab by Muslim students. They called on these institutions to comply with the law and respect the rights of Muslim individuals.

Furthermore, the NSCIA urged the Rivers State Government and the management of Rivers State University to implement a Supreme Court decision regarding the establishment of a mosque for Muslim students on campus.

The assembly encouraged Muslims to actively participate in nation-building by obtaining their National Identification Numbers and Permanent Voter Cards, thus ensuring their involvement in the democratic process. It also called for a greater focus on quality education that combines Islamic teachings with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

To bolster economic independence, the NSCIA urged Muslim organizations to engage in lawful investments, Zakat, and Waqf. The assembly adopted the 2026 report from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, endorsing its recommendations for enhancing the Hajj industry.

In a move to strengthen its leadership, the NSCIA expanded its National Executive Committee, appointing several new officials including Prof. Mahfouz A. Adedimeji as Deputy Secretary-General for National Affairs, and Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu as Public Relations Officer, among others.
