Amos Dangut appointed WAEC Registrar, marking a significant career milestone
Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut has been appointed as the new Registrar and CEO of WAEC, effective October 2, 2026.

Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut has officially taken on the role of Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), with his tenure commencing on October 2, 2026. This appointment marks a significant milestone in his nearly three-decade career with the examination body.
Born on October 2, 1967, in Mbar District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, Dangut's educational journey began at Government Secondary School, Riyom, before he completed his secondary education at Government Science School, Kuru. He graduated with a West African Senior School Certificate in 1986. Following this, he pursued a Bachelor of Agriculture degree in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, which he obtained in 1991.
Dangut's academic pursuits did not stop there; he holds three postgraduate degrees, including a Master of Science in Animal Science from the University of Ibadan, a PhD in Animal Science from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning from the National Open University of Nigeria.
His professional journey began in education, where he taught at St Louis College in Jos after completing his National Youth Service Corps programme. His innovative teaching earned him recognition for enhancing farmers' productivity during his service year. In 1998, he joined WAEC as an Assistant Registrar II, steadily climbing the ranks to become Deputy Registrar in April 2018.
Throughout his career at WAEC, Dangut has held various positions across multiple offices, including roles in Lagos, Uyo, Bauchi, and Yola. His extensive experience includes serving as the Head of Examinations Security and as a Deputy Registrar/Controller of the Post Examinations Department. Notably, between 2000 and 2006, he received commendations from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his transparent conduct of examinations.
In October 2023, he was appointed as the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, a position he held until his recent promotion. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and was instrumental in WAEC's transition to computer-based examinations, with nearly two million candidates registered for the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE.
Dangut's commitment to leveraging technology for educational advancements has been a hallmark of his career. He has actively promoted the use of Information and Communications Technology to enhance test development and administration processes. His vision for WAEC includes a continued shift towards digital examinations, reflecting a broader trend in educational assessment.
Beyond his administrative duties, Dangut is an accomplished academic, having published educational research and presented at various conferences. He is affiliated with professional organizations such as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Institute of Management. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys swimming, tennis, and farming.
As he steps into his new role at WAEC's international headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Dr. Amos Dangut's leadership is expected to influence the future of examinations in the West African region significantly.
