Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain, Okezie Ikpeazu, has asserted that the nation is making strides in its development despite facing significant economic challenges. Speaking in Madrid during the celebration of Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary, Ikpeazu emphasized the Federal Government's commitment to reforms aimed at fostering investment opportunities and promoting national growth.

Ikpeazu highlighted the government's focus on economic diversification, improved governance, and inclusive growth as essential components for building a prosperous and secure future. He acknowledged the current economic realities but insisted that progress is being made through concerted efforts to tackle the issues confronting the nation. "We are not satisfied with the present economic realities, but we are making progress as a people," he stated.

The ambassador underscored the vital role of Nigeria's youth, noting that the government is determined to harness their energy and creativity, along with the country's rich diversity, to achieve sustainable development. He called for a renewed commitment to national unity and economic advancement, urging stronger international partnerships to support these goals.

In his remarks, Ikpeazu expressed appreciation for the support from countries like Spain, describing their friendship as invaluable to Nigeria's development objectives. He pledged to continue fostering investment and business partnerships aimed at strengthening the economy. "I want to categorically affirm that we will continue to create opportunities for investment and business-to-business matchmaking to develop our country," he affirmed.

Reflecting on Nigeria's journey since independence in 1960, Ikpeazu encouraged citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous nation. He urged Nigerians to collaborate towards elevating the country's status in the global community. "As we raise a toast to Nigeria at 66, let us renew our pledge to work together for a nation that is peaceful, prosperous, and respected in the comity of nations," he said.

The ambassador also congratulated President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian populace, particularly those residing in Spain, on the anniversary. He paid tribute to the nationalists and patriots who fought for the country’s independence, emphasizing that nation-building requires sustained commitment, resilience, and collective responsibility.

Ikpeazu pointed out that Nigeria, as Africa's most populous nation and one of its largest economies, is rich in human talent, cultural diversity, and natural resources. He also noted the country's democratic institutions and its contributions to regional peace and security across Africa and beyond.

On the topic of Nigeria-Spain relations, Ikpeazu remarked on the strong and growing ties between the two nations, built on mutual respect and constructive dialogue. He mentioned that Spanish companies, such as GB Foods, are actively seeking opportunities within Nigeria, while the Nigerian community in Spain plays a significant role in the host country's social and economic development.

The ambassador expressed Nigeria's eagerness to deepen cooperation with Spain in various sectors, including renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and the creative industries. He also encouraged Nigerians living in Spain to uphold values that would enhance the country's image and strengthen relations between the two nations. "Your hard work, integrity, and achievements enhance the image of our nation and strengthen the bridges between our two countries," he concluded.
