Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, emphasized the importance of unity among Nigerians during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan. Speaking through his Deputy, Bayo Lawal, the governor called on citizens to appreciate the sacrifices made by the nation’s founding heroes and to remain united despite the current challenges facing the country.

The theme of this year's celebration, "Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing," reflects the pressing issues that continue to affect Nigeria. Makinde highlighted that the independence achieved in 1960 was a result of relentless struggles and sacrifices by the founding fathers, which should inspire current generations to be responsible and committed to nation-building.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, Makinde noted that the anniversary serves as a moment for sober reflection on the various challenges confronting Nigeria and Oyo State. He pointed out that independence has taught Nigerians the principles of self-governance, democracy, and the rule of law.

Makinde stressed that unity among the over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria is essential for the nation’s progress, urging citizens to view their diversity as a strength rather than a source of division. He stated, "We must appreciate our heroes past for what they did to achieve and attain independence in 1960. The freedom we enjoy today is a result of their labour."

Reflecting on the achievements of his administration since taking office in 2019, Makinde noted significant progress across various sectors, including education, security, sports, economy, and infrastructure. He expressed gratitude to the people of Oyo for their cooperation, which he credited for the administration's successes.

In terms of security, the governor highlighted the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which collaborates with other security agencies to maintain peace in the state. He also pointed out ongoing infrastructure development across the five zones of Oyo State, including improvements in education facilities, road networks, and healthcare services.

Makinde concluded his address by congratulating the people of Oyo State and all Nigerians on the occasion of Independence Day, urging everyone to continue living in peace for the betterment of the country. The celebration featured a march past, cultural displays, and the presentation of prizes, attended by various dignitaries including the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly and traditional rulers.
