The Kaduna State Government has announced a significant initiative to rehabilitate 17 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) into Centres of Excellence as part of its commitment to improving healthcare accessibility across the state. This was revealed by the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Dr. Abdulkadir Mu’azu Mayere, during a groundbreaking ceremony for the projects held on Wednesday.

Dr. Mayere emphasized that the upgrades will not only involve physical renovations but will also include enhancements in infrastructure, the supply of medical equipment, essential medicines, and improved service delivery. He stated, "Our objective is clear: when a citizen walks into a government health facility, that citizen should find a functional facility, competent health workers, essential medicines and a system that responds with dignity and respect."

The initiative is part of Governor Uba Sani’s broader strategy to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all residents, regardless of their location or socio-economic status. Dr. Mayere highlighted the vital role of primary healthcare in human capital development and sustainable economic growth, noting that PHCs serve as the first point of contact for essential services such as antenatal care, immunization, and early disease detection.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the healthcare centres, the state government has also distributed standard tricycle ambulances to various healthcare facilities. This move aims to strengthen the emergency referral system, particularly in rural and underserved communities, thereby reducing delays in accessing critical medical care. Dr. Mayere pointed out that an ambulance is more than just a vehicle; it is a crucial component in the continuum of care, especially in emergencies involving maternal and newborn health, trauma, and severe infections.

However, he cautioned that the effectiveness of the ambulances will depend on the establishment of proper management systems, including clear referral protocols, trained personnel, and adequate resources for fuel and maintenance. Dr. Mayere outlined that the success of these initiatives will be measured by increased access to quality antenatal and maternity services, improved childhood immunization rates, faster emergency referrals, and overall patient satisfaction.

He called on various stakeholders, including ministries, local government authorities, and community leaders, to ensure accountability in the implementation and management of these projects. Dr. Mayere urged the community to protect the facilities and provide feedback to the government, emphasizing that the groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a transformative journey for the state’s healthcare system.

The Secretary to the State Government concluded by expressing gratitude to development partners, the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, and health workers for their ongoing efforts in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in Kaduna State. This initiative is expected to create stronger healthcare hubs within local government areas, ultimately enhancing the quality of care provided to residents.
