A Nigerian solar technician has raised serious safety concerns after revealing a dangerously constructed lithium battery pack in a recent TikTok video. The technician, known as @mustymenat, discovered the alarming state of the battery while performing an upgrade for a customer.

The incident occurred when the technician was tasked with upgrading a 2.5-kilowatt, 100-amp 24-volt battery to a more powerful 200-amp 24-volt system. Upon opening the existing battery pack, he was taken aback by the hazardous conditions he found inside. Most notably, the battery was assembled without a Battery Management System (BMS), a critical component that helps regulate the battery's charging and discharging processes, protects against overheating, and ensures that individual cells operate within safe limits.

In his video, shared on September 29, 2026, the technician described the construction as “very risky,” emphasizing that the lack of a BMS posed significant fire and explosion hazards. He explained that the cells had simply been wired in series and connected directly to a display unit, completely bypassing the necessary safety features that a properly constructed battery should have.

The technician also highlighted other alarming aspects of the battery's workmanship. He noted that no cable lugs were used to secure the wiring connections; instead, it appeared that a heat source had been applied directly to the bare wires to fuse them in place. This method is not only unorthodox but also increases the risk of electrical failure. Additionally, ordinary binding wire was used to hold the battery cells together, further compromising the integrity of the pack.

To exacerbate the situation, the technician pointed out that several wires inside the battery were already melting, indicating severe overheating issues. He warned that such a construction could lead to catastrophic failures, including fires or explosions, if not addressed immediately.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper battery assembly and safety protocols in the solar energy sector. As the demand for renewable energy solutions continues to grow in Nigeria, ensuring that technicians are trained to follow industry standards is crucial to prevent potentially dangerous situations like this from occurring in the future.
