Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on secondary school students in Ogun State to develop strong character traits alongside their academic pursuits. Speaking at the Obasanjo Back-to-School Project held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, he emphasized that character is crucial for success in both education and life.

The event, organized in partnership with Providus Unity Bank, saw the distribution of essential school supplies, including bags, notebooks, and stationery, to over 100 students from six local government areas in Ogun State. Obasanjo, represented by Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, urged the students to focus on their studies and cultivate values that would enhance their personal growth.

Obasanjo stressed that academic excellence without good character could hinder students' aspirations. He encouraged the students to embrace reading as a vital habit and to limit distractions from smartphones and social media. "Character, my dear students, is extremely important. Academic brilliance without good character is insufficient," he stated, urging them to not be discouraged by challenging subjects such as Mathematics and Physics.

The former president highlighted the importance of resilience in education, advising students to persist in their studies despite difficulties. He shared motivational insights, reminding them that failure should not define their identity. "There is a difference between 'I failed this test' and 'I am a failure.' Think of what went wrong, what can I do, what can I change, who can help me, then try again," he said.

As the new academic session begins, Obasanjo likened the school environment to a construction site for their future, where every assignment and good habit serves as building blocks for success. He encouraged students to approach their education with joy and determination, stating, "Go back to school with joy, go back with purpose and determination to be better this session."

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in Ogun State, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, praised the initiative, noting that the support provided would significantly alleviate financial burdens for families. He urged the students to maximize the benefits of the program and strive for academic excellence.

Bisi Kolapo, Chairman of the Youth Development Centre, explained that this initiative was the first of its kind, aimed at assisting underprivileged students. She highlighted that the selection process was merit-based and coordinated with the state’s Ministry of Education. The program aims not only to provide material support but also to inspire students to focus on their studies.

The Obasanjo Back-to-School Project represents a commitment to youth empowerment and development in Ogun State, with plans for continued support for indigent students in the future. The initiative is designed to enhance learning and provide essential resources for students as they embark on their educational journeys.
