A Nigerian woman has bravely opened up about her traumatic experiences while working as a maid in Cairo, Egypt, where she spent nearly a decade in servitude. The woman, now in her early 30s, traveled to Egypt in 2016 in search of better opportunities but encountered a reality fraught with exploitation and hardship.

In an interview with content creator Egungun, she detailed her journey, stating that she worked for seven years and six months as a domestic worker. Her ordeal took a tragic turn when she suffered a serious accident after falling from a nine-storey building, which she described as leaving her with nothing.

Reflecting on her decision to leave Nigeria, she explained, "I didn’t wish to go, but I came from a very poor family background." This sentiment echoes the struggles faced by many who seek employment abroad, often driven by dire economic circumstances.

The woman recounted the dehumanizing conditions that domestic workers often endure. She revealed that upon arrival in Egypt, her passport was confiscated by her employers, a common practice that leaves workers vulnerable and unable to return home until debts are settled. "They usually treat us like slaves, as if we don’t have anyone," she lamented.

Her monthly salary was around ₦100,000, but the conditions of her employment were stark. She described instances where she had to sleep on the floor or even on her employer's dog bed, highlighting the lack of basic human dignity afforded to her and others in similar positions.

Communication with her family was severely restricted during her time abroad, as she was unable to reach out until she had cleared her debts. Upon finally settling her payments, she learned that her mother had fallen ill, adding emotional distress to her already challenging situation.

This woman's story sheds light on the grim realities faced by many Nigerian domestic workers in foreign countries, where the promise of better pay often leads to exploitation and abuse. Her experiences serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals seeking a better life, often at a tremendous personal cost.
