During the USAFRICA Business Week held in New York on September 23, 2026, Nigeria's Minister of State for Regional Development, Hon. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, emphasized the country's commitment to providing investors with clearer pathways to explore opportunities across its diverse regions and into West African markets. This event coincided with the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, showcasing Nigeria's strategic approach to regional development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Hon. Ahmadu, in her keynote address, articulated how Nigeria's regional development agenda is designed to facilitate better investment planning. She stated that the Ministry of Regional Development is now responsible for overseeing various development commissions across the country, which include the North Central, North West, North East, South East, South West, and the Niger Delta regions. This structure aims to enhance coordination and address critical infrastructure gaps in sectors such as roads, power, and agriculture.

Joining Hon. Ahmadu was Dr. Mariam Temitope Masha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Regional Development Programmes. Together, they underscored the importance of coordinated planning in helping investors identify optimal locations for projects, potential partners, and market access. They illustrated their points using the example of a processing plant, highlighting that successful investments depend not only on site selection but also on the availability of reliable energy, supply chains, transportation, and access to customers.

The discussions at USAFRICA Business Week also connected Nigeria's regional planning initiatives to President Tinubu's broader economic strategy for West Africa. The President has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to transform into a manufacturing hub by enhancing regional value chains and trade among member countries. The administration's focus on improving border efficiency, digital customs processes, and implementing the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System is part of its efforts to facilitate smoother trade across the continent.

Both speakers conveyed a practical message to potential investors: when assessing projects in Nigeria, it is crucial to consider the resources available from neighboring states, the necessary infrastructure, and the market reach. They argued that improved regional planning and trade systems could significantly reduce operational friction, although each investment proposal would still require thorough commercial and regulatory scrutiny.

The USAFRICA Business Week served as a vital platform for fostering dialogue on capital, policy, and market access along the U.S.–Africa corridor. The exchange of ideas at the event is expected to lead to the identification and preparation of regional opportunities for prospective investors. The discussions also complemented a separate session titled "Investing in Abuja," which focused on translating public priorities into actionable projects that benefit both investors and local communities in Nigeria.
