The Nigerian naira has shown significant gains against major currencies, including the US dollar, euro, and British pound, as the interbank foreign exchange (FX) turnover surged by 226% to reach $80.58 million. This increase in liquidity has contributed to a narrowing gap between the official and parallel market rates, providing a more stable environment for currency trading.

On Tuesday, the naira appreciated by 0.06%, closing at N1,330.47 per dollar, compared to N1,331.33 in the previous trading session. During the day, the dollar was exchanged within a range of N1,327.50 to N1,331.50, indicating relatively stable conditions in the official market. This improvement is attributed to a notable rise in dollar liquidity, which has given banks and businesses better access to foreign currency, thereby alleviating some of the pressure on the naira.

In the parallel market, the dollar was quoted at approximately N1,375, reflecting an appreciation of about 0.36%. This development has reduced the difference between the official and parallel market rates to around N45 per dollar, down from N49 previously. The narrowing gap is crucial as it can discourage speculation and reduce the tendency for individuals and businesses to turn to unofficial FX channels.

The naira's strength is not limited to the dollar; it has also gained against the euro and the British pound. The official exchange rate for the pound now stands at N1,760.62, while the euro is quoted at N1,509.56. In the parallel market, the pound trades around N1,855, and the euro at approximately N1,550. This trend indicates a significant improvement in the naira's position compared to earlier periods when the pound was exchanging for over N2,000.

Supporting this currency appreciation are Nigeria's rising external reserves, which have increased to about $54.91 billion, up from $45.50 billion at the start of the year. This growth in reserves enhances the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) ability to manage volatility in the foreign exchange market effectively. Additionally, the current global oil prices, trading around $100.19 per barrel, further bolster Nigeria's dollar earnings, providing additional support for the naira.

As traders keep a close eye on the market, there is cautious optimism regarding whether the improved FX liquidity and rising reserves can sustain the naira's recent gains and continue to close the gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates. The ongoing developments in Nigeria's foreign exchange landscape will be pivotal for businesses and consumers alike, as they navigate the complexities of currency trading in the country.
