A senior official of the ruling party in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was brutally murdered on Sunday after participating in a radio program aimed at raising awareness about the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

Marie-Celestin Karondwa, who served as the acting president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) federal executive committee in Butembo, was attacked shortly after defending the party's stance on the existence of Ebola and its associated dangers during the broadcast. According to a statement from the UDPS federation in Butembo, the assailants not only beat Karondwa but also looted his belongings and subsequently set his house ablaze. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after the assault.

The identity and motives of the attackers remain unclear, but this incident reflects a troubling trend of violence against healthcare workers and facilities in the region. Such attacks are often fueled by misinformation and a deep-seated distrust of health responders, which have been exacerbated during the current Ebola outbreak.

In a related incident, armed men attacked a hand-washing checkpoint in the nearby Beni territory on Saturday, resulting in at least one death and several injuries, as reported by a local civil society group. These violent acts have raised alarm among health officials, as they disrupt essential health services and hinder efforts to control the outbreak.

Ebola, a highly contagious viral disease first identified in the DRC in 1976, can spread through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials. The current outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, was officially announced on May 15 and has already resulted in over 8,067 infections and 3,901 deaths across seven provinces. This outbreak has been characterized as the largest and deadliest in the DRC's history, surpassing the scale of the 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which infected more than 28,600 people and claimed over 11,000 lives.

As the situation continues to evolve, health authorities are grappling with the dual challenge of combating the virus and addressing the rising violence against those working to mitigate its impact. The DRC health ministry and various health organizations are urging the public to rely on accurate information and support health workers in their efforts to control the outbreak and save lives.
