The fourth Vanguard Mental Health Summit is set to take place on October 9, 2026, at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, with a strong emphasis on the mental health challenges faced by young Nigerians. The theme for this year's summit is "Advancing Youth Mental Health in Nigeria," accompanied by the sub-theme "Mental Health in a Digital Age: Navigating Social Media, Technology and Wellbeing." This event aims to address the increasing pressures that youth encounter in today's digital landscape.

Mr. Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), will chair the summit, bringing a unique perspective on the intersections of mental health, public safety, and substance use among the youth. His involvement underscores the importance of addressing the consequences of risky behaviors and trauma, which are critical issues affecting young people today.

The summit builds on the discussions from the previous year, which focused on suicide prevention and the need for enhanced mental health support systems in Nigeria. This year, the focus shifts towards understanding how digital technology impacts mental health, including issues such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and digital addiction.

Dignitaries expected to attend include the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who will serve as the Chief Host, and the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, along with Brigadier General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, as Special Guests of Honour. The summit will gather a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and youth representatives, to discuss practical solutions to youth mental health challenges.

The event will feature a keynote address from Dr. Veronica Nyamali, President of the Association of Psychiatrists of Nigeria, who will speak on advancing youth mental health in Nigeria. Other notable speakers include Prof. Omoti Ernest, President of the Nigeria Medical Association, who will discuss the importance of making youth mental health a collective responsibility.

A significant highlight of the summit will be a panel discussion addressing the question, "Who is responsible for the Mental Health of Young People?" This session aims to explore the shared responsibilities of families, schools, healthcare systems, and the media in supporting youth mental health.

Additionally, participants will engage in discussions about stigma, barriers to seeking help, and the role of technology in shaping young people's mental health experiences. The summit aims to move beyond mere awareness campaigns, advocating for actionable strategies that ensure access to mental health care and support for young Nigerians.
