The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revealed a significant investment of over N70 billion in various corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects aimed at improving educational facilities across the country. This announcement was made by the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, during the commissioning of a renovated school in Modakeke, Osun State.

Speaking to journalists, Adeniyi highlighted the importance of enhancing learning environments in schools, particularly for female students. He noted that the funds for these initiatives were sourced from the salaries of Customs officers, with each officer pledging to donate 25% of their annual salary to support CSR projects. This collective effort underscores the NCS's commitment to contributing positively to society.

The recent renovation project at Ife Girls High School in Ile-Ife serves as a prime example of the NCS's efforts. Adeniyi described the condition of the school prior to the intervention as alarming, stating that the dilapidated state of the facilities hindered educational progress. He recalled the challenges faced when accessing the school's laboratory, which had become overgrown and unkempt, emphasizing the need for urgent action to restore the school's former glory.

Adeniyi expressed concern over the declining enrollment numbers at the school, which had dropped to around 200 students. He attributed this decline to the deteriorating infrastructure and emphasized the necessity of prioritizing female education. "Female children are particularly more necessary to us because of their special needs," he stated, reinforcing the NCS's dedication to fostering an environment conducive to learning for young girls.

The initiative has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Osun State government and the Ooni of Ife, as well as the school's alumni association. The principal of Ife Girls High School, Mrs. Akinremi Iyabo, commended the NCS for their intervention and assured that the renovated facilities would be maintained properly.

In addition to the renovation of the school, the NCS has launched the "Customs Care" initiative, which aims to channel a significant portion of its resources into community-focused projects. This initiative reflects the NCS's commitment to enhancing the welfare of the public and addressing critical educational needs across Nigeria.

As the NCS continues to implement its CSR projects, the organization remains hopeful that such efforts will inspire other corporate entities and individuals to contribute to the improvement of educational infrastructure in the country, thereby fostering a brighter future for Nigerian youth.
