The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced its ongoing monitoring of the water levels at the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, citing concerns over potential flooding along the River Benue. This proactive measure is part of NEMA's broader strategy to manage the flood season of 2026 and mitigate risks to communities situated along the river.

In its recent report submitted to the Office of the National Security Adviser, NEMA outlined its flood preparedness and emergency response initiatives for July and August. The agency emphasized that monitoring the Lagdo Dam is crucial, especially given the historical context of flooding incidents linked to water releases from the dam.

NEMA has ramped up coordination efforts with various federal and state agencies, enhancing its surveillance of high-risk areas while also promoting public awareness regarding flood safety. The agency is actively disseminating early-warning information and advisories to communities nationwide, collaborating with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), and traditional institutions to ensure that residents in vulnerable areas are well-informed and prepared.

As part of its flood preparedness strategy, NEMA encourages residents in high-risk zones to take necessary precautions, including relocating to safer areas if needed. The agency has also addressed circulating rumors on social media regarding the potential collapse of the Kagini Dam in Kaduna, stating that a joint assessment confirmed there is no immediate threat that could lead to catastrophic flooding in Kaduna and Niger states.

NEMA's response teams are on standby to handle any flooding or climate-related incidents, having already responded to emergencies in various locations such as Uyo, Eket, and Calabar. In August, NEMA's Director-General, Zubaida Umar, activated the National Emergency Operations Centre to enhance coordination and data management regarding the 2026 flood situation.

Additionally, NEMA has conducted flood simulation exercises in Calabar and participated in joint drills in Adamawa State to test emergency response protocols and inter-agency collaboration. These exercises are designed to ensure that all stakeholders are prepared for potential flood emergencies.

During July and August, NEMA provided relief assistance to over 24,000 households, benefiting around 147,750 individuals. The agency also upgraded three Emergency Response and Ambulance Bays in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas to improve emergency response times and medical support.

The focus on monitoring the Lagdo Dam comes in light of previous flood disasters, particularly the severe flooding in 2022, which was exacerbated by excess water released from the dam. NEMA had previously warned that such releases could pose significant risks to communities along the River Benue, emphasizing the importance of ongoing vigilance and preparedness as the flood season progresses.
