Augustine Maazi, a Nigerian national, was arraigned in the Accra Circuit Court 8 on Wednesday, facing multiple charges related to a planned robbery of three banks in the Labone area of Ghana's capital. Maazi, who has pleaded not guilty, is facing eight counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery.

The court proceedings follow Maazi's arrest on August 13, 2026, after the Ghana Police Service acted on intelligence regarding a potential bank heist. Reports indicate that police received a tip-off around 10:45 am, prompting them to deploy personnel to the Labone area. Upon arrival, officers noticed suspicious vehicles parked near the targeted banks: GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.

As the police approached, one of the vehicles reportedly sped away, leading to a pursuit that ended with Maazi's apprehension. Another suspect managed to escape during the incident. In a separate confrontation, occupants of a second vehicle attempted to flee while firing at the police, resulting in a shootout that left two suspects dead. Authorities recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson, along with a pistol from the scene.

Despite the police's claims of a thwarted robbery, GCB Bank has publicly stated that its Labone branch was not targeted and that no robbery or attempted robbery occurred at its premises. The bank emphasized that no customers, staff, or property were affected by any criminal activity.

Maazi's previous bail request was denied, and he has been remanded in police custody until the next hearing, which is scheduled for September 2, 2026. The case continues to draw attention as it unfolds in the Ghanaian legal system, highlighting ongoing concerns about security and crime in the region.
