The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its commitment to assist the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by providing biometric verification technology. This initiative aims to strengthen the collaboration between the two federal agencies and was discussed during a recent courtesy visit by JAMB's Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit, Prof. Aina highlighted JAMB's interest in utilizing INEC's extensive experience in biometric technology, which has been effectively deployed for the identification and verification of large populations of Nigerians. He noted that JAMB is keen on enhancing the integrity of its examination processes and believes that INEC's biometric verification equipment, which may no longer be actively used, could play a significant role in this effort.

Prof. Aina stated, "We approached INEC as a sister agency with considerable experience in the deployment of biometric technology for the identification and verification of large numbers of Nigerians." He urged INEC to consider making some of its equipment available to JAMB to support the Board's objectives.

In response, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, welcomed the JAMB delegation and praised the Board's crucial role in Nigeria’s education sector. He acknowledged the importance of inter-agency collaboration and emphasized that government institutions should leverage their respective expertise and resources to foster national development.

Prof. Amupitan pointed out that INEC's recent electoral activities, including various elections and bye-elections, have showcased the Commission's growing technological capabilities. He noted that the use of technology in these electoral processes has received positive feedback from stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission, particularly regarding the credibility and peaceful conduct of the elections.

To address JAMB's request, the INEC Chairman instructed the Director of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Lawrence Bayode, to conduct a proof-of-concept assessment. This assessment will evaluate the availability, technical condition, and suitability of any biometric verification equipment that could potentially be utilized by JAMB.

Prof. Amupitan assured the JAMB team that INEC is open to exploring further areas of cooperation that could enhance the capabilities of both institutions in fulfilling their mandates. In closing, Prof. Aina expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated JAMB's commitment to strengthening its collaboration with INEC, particularly in leveraging technology to improve its examination processes.
