In a significant move to bolster adolescent healthcare, the Kwara State Government has inaugurated six youth-friendly health centres within primary healthcare facilities across the state. This initiative aims to provide adolescents with confidential and respectful access to healthcare services, addressing a critical gap in the state's health programmes.

The centres, supported by the Global Fund and implemented by Jhpiego through the Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Communicable Diseases Project, are strategically located in various local government areas. The facilities can be found at Ojomu Primary Health Centre, Lamodi Comprehensive Health Centre, and Nawairudeen District Health Centre in Offa Local Government Area, as well as Ogele and Otte primary healthcare centres in Asa LGA, and Olorun Primary Health Centre in Moro LGA.

The launch of one of the centres at Ogele Primary Health Centre was officiated by Prof. Nusirat Elelu, the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency. She emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that adolescents have historically received less attention in healthcare compared to women and children. "We have clear programmes for our women and children. However, our adolescents and young people have consistently been neglected in our healthcare programmes," Elelu stated.

Elelu highlighted the state government's renewed focus on adolescent health, under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. She mentioned that recent efforts have aimed at integrating more interventions directed towards young people, with support from various development partners, including the EU-SARAH programme and Jhpiego.

The newly established centres are designed to provide safe spaces for young people to seek health information and services without the fear of stigma or judgment. Elelu noted that these facilities will have trained personnel available to discuss sensitive health issues that adolescents may hesitate to share with family or friends. "This is going to be a safe haven for young people. This facility is dedicated solely to you," she remarked.

The Executive Secretary encouraged adolescents to seek professional guidance for decisions that could impact their long-term health and future. She described the centres as crucial for fostering a sense of belonging within the healthcare system for young individuals, stating, "We hope that these facilities will be well utilized."

Furthermore, Elelu reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring that the youth remain healthy and prepared to contribute positively to society. She expressed a desire for the expansion of these initiatives to more local government areas, urging Jhpiego and other partners to consider extending their reach in future operational strategies.

The Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Communicable Diseases Project, which runs until December 31, 2026, is focused on improving integrated, patient-centred services for vulnerable populations. It addresses various health issues, including sexual and reproductive health, maternal and newborn health, and communicable diseases, with technical support from organizations such as the World Health Organisation and the Clinton Health Access Initiative.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing healthcare access for adolescents in Kwara State, ensuring that young people receive the attention and services they deserve.
