In a significant development for Nigerian football, FIFA has announced plans to send a delegation to Nigeria to discuss the proposed reforms following the mass resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board led by Ibrahim Gusau. This decision comes in the wake of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's directive for a comprehensive overhaul of the country's football structure, which he described as a national emergency.

The meeting between a Nigerian delegation, headed by Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino took place at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich. During the discussions, the Nigerian representatives presented a proposal for the establishment of a 'normalisation committee' tasked with facilitating the reform process and organizing new elections for a fresh NFF board.

While the talks were described as fruitful, FIFA has withheld immediate approval for the normalisation committee, pending the outcome of their upcoming visit to Nigeria. This visit is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the committee's composition, as FIFA will be involved in selecting its members. The integrity and eligibility of these individuals will be assessed through mandatory tests, similar to those required for executive committee members of FIFA's affiliates.

The urgency for reform stems from the recent turmoil within the NFF, which has left a leadership vacuum following the board's resignation. One of the leading candidates to head the normalisation committee is AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). His candidacy is reportedly favored by influential figures within the presidency. Mustapha's experience includes membership in FIFA's Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Committee, providing him with valuable insights into FIFA's governance and operational frameworks.

The National Sports Commission is currently engaged in discussions with FIFA to finalize the details of the normalisation committee and its mandate.
