Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has publicly rejected the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu as a candidate for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by his former teammate Obafemi Martins. Udeze expressed his disapproval during a recent broadcast on Brila FM, stating that he believes Martins' suggestion is misguided.

Martins, speaking on The Obi One Podcast hosted by John Obi Mikel, argued for the need for a young leader to steer Nigerian football in a new direction. He highlighted Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a suitable candidate, citing his youth and understanding of the aspirations of Nigerian fans. "We just need someone that can help—a young person that understands the game and the system," Martins said, expressing confidence in Tinubu’s potential to bring about positive change.

However, Udeze took a firm stance against Martins' view, stating, "For me, it's a bad idea. I don't know what made Martins make such a statement—maybe because he's a friend to Seyi Tinubu—but like I said, I don't buy the idea." He further emphasized that there are other young candidates who could be more fitting for the role, mentioning Seyi Olofinjana as a preferable alternative.

The debate comes at a critical time for Nigerian football, following the recent resignations of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and several executive members. These resignations were prompted by disappointing performances from Nigeria's national teams in international competitions, leading to calls for a comprehensive overhaul of the football administration in the country. President Tinubu has ordered these changes, indicating a desire for fresh leadership and direction.

Udeze's remarks reflect a broader concern among football stakeholders regarding the qualifications and experience of potential leaders in Nigerian football. As discussions continue about the future of the NFF, the endorsement of candidates like Seyi Tinubu will likely remain contentious, with many advocating for a more thorough vetting process to ensure that the right individuals are chosen to lead the sport in Nigeria.
