In a heartbreaking incident, two teenagers drowned in a river in the Askplaye community of Kaduna State. The victims, identified as Suleiman Yakubu, 19, and Abubakar Mohammed, 17, lost their lives due to the severe flooding that has affected various parts of the state.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the drowning, stating that the bodies of the teenagers have not yet been recovered. This tragic event occurred after approximately four days of torrential rainfall that began last Thursday and continued through Monday, causing significant disruptions in the area.

NEMA's North-West Operations Office in Kaduna has been actively assessing the flood situation in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders. They reported that several communities experienced flash floods, leading to submerged roads and temporarily trapping residents in their homes. The flooding has created hazardous conditions, forcing many to navigate affected areas with extreme caution.

In response to the incident, Hajia Halima Suleiman, the Head of Operations at NEMA, led a team to assess the impact of the flooding on local communities. During this visit, she extended condolences to the family of Suleiman Yakubu, offering support in their time of grief.

NEMA has committed to continuing its monitoring of the situation and assessing the needs of the affected communities to ensure a coordinated and effective response. The agency, along with KADSEMA and other emergency responders, is working diligently to address the challenges posed by the flooding and to provide assistance where necessary.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the focus remains on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of residents in the wake of the severe weather conditions.
