The Ogun State Government has raised an alarm for residents in eleven communities as the second phase of the 2026 rainy season approaches, with predictions of intense rainfall. The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted an average rainfall of 360mm for September, significantly increasing the risk of flooding in the region.

Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration issued the warning through the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, who highlighted the potential for river and coastal flooding due to prolonged rainfall, controlled overflow from Oyan Dam, and tidal fluctuations affecting the Ogun River. In a statement released on September 1, Oresanya urged residents to remain vigilant and to consider relocating to safer areas if necessary.

The communities specifically alerted include Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, and Warewa, as well as parts of Abeokuta. Coastal areas such as Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara, and Igele are also under advisories. Oresanya emphasized the importance of preparedness, especially for fish farmers operating within floodplains, advising them to harvest their stocks promptly to prevent losses.

The warning follows a previous rainy season from mid-March to July, which resulted in heavy downpours and isolated flash floods across Ogun State. Oresanya credited the relatively low damage during that period to regular maintenance of drainage systems and public awareness initiatives regarding waste management. Key waterways, including the Sokori River and its tributaries, received particular attention to mitigate flooding risks.

In light of the impending rains, Oresanya has directed local government authorities, emergency responders, and community leaders to enhance flood-response measures. Regular monitoring of vulnerable locations and maintaining clear drainage channels are crucial steps in preparing for the anticipated weather conditions.

This alert comes as the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre has classified 915 communities across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory as being at critical flood risk from August 27 to September 9, 2026. Major urban areas such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan are included in this critical-risk list, prompting federal authorities to encourage residents to verify evacuation routes and adhere to emergency instructions.

The federal government has also issued a seven-day flood warning covering 33 states, urging residents in floodplain areas to relocate and for state governments to activate emergency plans as rising river levels pose a significant threat to many regions in Nigeria.
