The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an ambitious plan to establish a high-speed rail corridor that will connect Lagos to Maiduguri. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create an integrated and efficient transportation network across the country. The announcement was made by Olufunso Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, during the opening of the 19th National Council on Transportation held in Abuja.

The proposed rail line is designed to accommodate trains traveling at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour, significantly reducing travel time between major cities. This development is expected to provide Nigerians with a faster and more reliable alternative to road transportation, which has been plagued by congestion and delays.

Adebiyi emphasized the critical role of transportation in driving economic development, highlighting its importance in facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services. He noted that the ongoing expansion and rehabilitation of Nigeria's railway network marks a significant revival of rail transportation in the country. Recent projects that have been completed include railway corridors such as Port Harcourt-Aba, Warri-Itakpe, Lagos-Ibadan, and Abuja-Kaduna.

In addition to the Lagos-Maiduguri corridor, Adebiyi mentioned that the construction of the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano rail line is nearing completion and is expected to commence operations by December. Ongoing projects also include the Kaduna-Daura-Katsina, Katsina-Jibia-Maradi, and Kano-Dutse corridors, which are set to enhance connectivity in various regions.

Abel Enitan, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, also spoke at the event, stressing that infrastructure development alone is insufficient for building an effective transportation system. He called for strong institutions, effective regulation, reliable data, innovation, and a skilled workforce to complement infrastructure investments. Enitan described transportation as the lifeblood of the economy and urged for stronger collaboration among the Federal Government, state governments, and relevant transport agencies to achieve a truly integrated national transport system.

This high-speed rail initiative is expected to not only improve travel efficiency but also stimulate economic growth by enhancing access to markets and reducing logistical challenges across the country.
