Emir of Zurmi, Bello Suleiman, passes away at Federal Medical Centre in Gusau
The Emir of Zurmi, Bello Suleiman, has died, marking a turbulent period for the emirate.

The Emir of Zurmi, Bello Suleiman, has died at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Monday afternoon. His death marks the end of a five-year reign that began after the controversial deposition of his uncle in 2021.
Suleiman ascended to the throne following the removal of his uncle, Abubakar Atiku, who was deposed by the Zamfara State government due to alleged connections to banditry and security threats in the region. Atiku's removal was part of a broader crackdown on traditional rulers accused of undermining security efforts. He passed away in an Egyptian hospital shortly after his deposition.
During his tenure, Emir Suleiman faced significant challenges, including a violent attack on the emirate palace in May 2024. Armed bandits stormed the palace, resulting in the deaths of three security personnel and the abduction of several individuals, including the emir's chief detail, Buhari Yusuf. The attack was reportedly fueled by local grievances against vigilante groups, which were accused of mistreating Fulani residents.
The bandits also vandalized a telecommunications facility, disrupting communication and hindering security responses during the raid. Residents expressed fears that the emir himself was a target during this incursion, highlighting the precarious situation faced by traditional leaders in the area.
Zurmi, located along the border with Niger and adjacent to Katsina State, is the second most populous town in Zamfara after Gusau. Its geographical position has made it susceptible to cross-border criminal activities, further complicating the security landscape in the region.
The death of Bello Suleiman adds to the ongoing instability within the traditional institution in Zamfara, which has been marred by disputes and violence since 2021. As the emirate mourns the loss of its leader, the future of the region's governance and security remains uncertain.
