In a significant political maneuver, the Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN) has initiated plans to persuade former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to step aside in the upcoming 2027 presidential election and support President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign. This development emerged from a meeting held in Owerri on August 29, where the group discussed strategies to secure votes for Tinubu across the five states of the Southeast.

The group, led by Franklin Ngoforo, aims to engage prominent Igbo leaders and elder statesmen, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership, to form a delegation that would approach Obi directly. Ngoforo emphasized that this initiative is not intended to undermine Obi's political stature but rather to align with the long-term interests of the Southeast region.

Ngoforo articulated that supporting Tinubu could pave the way for the Southeast to secure the presidency in future elections. He noted that if re-elected, Tinubu would be constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, potentially opening the door for the Southeast to mount a credible presidential bid in the subsequent election cycle.

The group believes that by backing the Southwest now, while establishing strategic political alliances, the Southeast can generate goodwill and reciprocal obligations that would be beneficial in future political contests. Ngoforo stated, "The issue is bigger than one election and bigger than one individual," urging the Ndigbo to view the current political landscape as an opportunity to accumulate essential political capital across regions.

As part of their strategy, the RHGN plans to reach out to influential figures such as Senator John Azuta Mbata, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe to lead discussions with Obi. Ngoforo reassured Obi that stepping aside in 2027 would not signify the end of his presidential aspirations but rather a strategic deferral to a more opportune moment in the future.

This call for Obi's withdrawal comes at a time when political alliances are crucial in shaping the dynamics of the upcoming elections. The RHGN's approach reflects a calculated gamble aimed at fostering unity among the Southeast and Southwest regions, with the hope of securing a stronger political foothold in Nigeria's evolving political landscape.
