The O’odua People’s Congress (OPC), a prominent Yoruba nationalist group, has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. This announcement was made during the celebration of the organization's 32nd Founders Day in Lagos on Saturday, where a new National Executive Council (NEC) was also inaugurated.

At the event, Mr. Wasiu Afolabi, the re-elected President of OPC, emphasized the group’s commitment to rallying behind Tinubu, similar to their efforts during his successful campaign in 2023. He stated, "We contributed our quota to ensuring the victory of Tinubu in 2023. One lesson from Fasehun is that the organisation should regard any Yoruba man in office as OPC’s corporate project."

Afolabi further urged support for Tinubu's second-term bid from all regions, particularly the North, highlighting the reciprocal nature of political alliances in Nigeria. He noted, "The North especially, should realise that it is payback time for the backing that Tinubu gave to late President Muhammadu Buhari’s two tenures of eight years."

Reflecting on the historical context of OPC’s formation, Afolabi recalled that the organization was established in response to the national crisis that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, which denied the late Chief Moshood Abiola his mandate. He described OPC as a “child of necessity” born to address the grievances of the Yoruba people and to advocate for their rights.

Afolabi also took the opportunity to call on government officials at all levels to prioritize policies aimed at addressing Nigeria's pressing challenges, particularly insecurity. He stated, "The leaders must remember that the Nigerian Constitution they all swore to uphold says in Section 14(2)(b) that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government."

In a bid to contribute to national security, Afolabi offered OPC’s assistance to government agencies, expressing readiness to collaborate in securing the South-West region against internal and external threats.

The occasion was also marked by remarks from Mr. Wale Oshun, the Chairman of the event, who praised OPC’s legacy in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and reaffirmed the organization’s relevance in contemporary politics. He highlighted the enduring vision of the late Dr. Frederick Fasehun, the founder of OPC, who passed away eight years ago.

The event drew hundreds of OPC members, all united in their endorsement of Tinubu’s bid for a second term, reinforcing the group's influential role in Yoruba politics and its commitment to national issues.
