On Saturday, August 29, Niamey, the capital of Niger, was shaken by heavy gunfire and explosions, particularly around the international airport and the security perimeter near the presidency. This incident marks the third significant attack in the country this year, raising alarm over the ongoing security situation.

The violence reportedly began early in the morning and lasted for approximately two hours. While a member of Niger's Consultative Council, Bana Ibrahim, took to social media to announce that the situation was "under control," witnesses contradicted this claim, stating that the fighting continued even after his post.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motives behind it remain unclear. Analysts are divided on whether the assault was orchestrated by jihadists, military coup plotters, or armed rebel groups. Wasim Nasir, a journalist specializing in Sahel conflicts, suggested on social media that the incident could be linked to a coup d'Γ©tat or internal military conflicts. In contrast, conflict researcher Hasret Kargin emphasized the lack of information regarding the attackers' identities, suggesting that both jihadist and rebel groups could be potential culprits.

Niger has been grappling with persistent threats from various armed factions, including affiliates of the Islamic State and al-Qaeda, which have been active in the Sahel region and the Lake Chad basin. The country has faced increasing violence since General Abdourahamane Tchiani assumed control of the military government in July 2023, following the ousting of elected president Mohamed Bazoum. The junta has struggled to maintain security while dealing with a tense relationship with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which condemned the coup.

As of now, the Nigerien government has not released any official statements regarding the attack, leaving citizens and observers anxious about the implications for national security and stability in the region. The recent surge in violence underscores the fragile state of affairs in Niger, as the country continues to navigate a complex landscape of political unrest and armed conflict.
