The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully extradited two Nigerian nationals, Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle, to the United States to face serious charges of child exploitation and sexual extortion. This significant development occurred on August 26, 2026, following a request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Both individuals are implicated in schemes that allegedly targeted teenage boys in the U.S., leading to tragic outcomes, including the deaths of two minors. The EFCC's statement highlights that investigations revealed the duo was involved in extortion tactics using Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) to manipulate their victims, primarily boys aged between 13 and 17.

In one reported case, a 13-year-old victim was approached via Instagram, where he was solicited to exchange nude photographs. The situation escalated when the perpetrator threatened to share these images with the boy's contacts if he did not comply with monetary demands. Disturbingly, the FBI's findings indicated that communications persisted even after the minor expressed suicidal thoughts.

The EFCC's collaboration with the FBI has been crucial in identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in such heinous crimes. Following the FBI's request for assistance, the EFCC arrested Adekunle and initiated extradition proceedings against Olawale in the Federal High Court, Lagos. Although an initial ruling on June 10, 2024, denied the extradition request, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation appealed the decision.

On July 7, 2026, the Court of Appeal in Lagos overturned the previous ruling, allowing for Olawale's extradition to proceed. The charges against him include multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, enticement, interstate threatening communications, and distribution of child pornography.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the EFCC and the FBI to combat transnational crimes, particularly those exploiting vulnerable minors through internet platforms. The extradition of Olawale and Adekunle marks a significant step in addressing the growing concern of online sexual exploitation and extortion, emphasizing the need for continued international cooperation in tackling these crimes.
