The Labour Party has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who died recently at the age of 60. The party described Ugboaja as a dedicated unionist and democrat whose contributions significantly shaped both the Labour Party and Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

In a statement released by Ken Asogwa, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ugboaja was recognized for his unwavering commitment to the labour movement and his instrumental role in fostering a strong relationship between the Labour Party and organized labour. Asogwa noted that Ugboaja's death has left a "painful void not only in the Labour movement but also in the Labour Party family."

Ugboaja was pivotal in the development of the party, particularly through his active participation in meetings that led to the creation of the party's new constitution. Asogwa emphasized, "He actively participated and made invaluable contributions to several meetings and deliberations that culminated in the birth of our new Party Constitution."

The Labour Party also highlighted Ugboaja's historical significance, recalling his involvement in the National Executive Council that approved the formation of the Party for Social Democracy in 2003, which later evolved into the Labour Party in 2004. His leadership roles extended to serving as the party’s Deputy National Secretary and as a member of the NLC Political Commission.

Beyond his political engagements, Ugboaja was a notable participant in the National Constitutional Reform Conferences of 2005 and 2014, where he contributed significantly to the discussions and outcomes of these pivotal gatherings.

Asogwa remarked on Ugboaja's legacy, stating, "His contributions to the labour movement, democratic development, and Nigeria’s political history will remain part of the country’s collective memory." He added that Ugboaja's life was characterized by a commitment to service, stating, "Ugboaja’s life was therefore one of service to the Labour movement, the democratic cause, and the Nigerian nation. His contributions to these causes will remain a part of our collective history and will not be forgotten."
