NSCDC conducts raid, apprehends three for illegal sand mining in Anambra
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended three individuals for illegal sand mining activities in Anambra State.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made significant strides in combating illegal mining activities in Anambra State, leading to the arrest of three individuals for allegedly mining sharp sand without proper authorization. The arrests took place at Obiaja River, located along the Nnobi-Ideani Junction on Uke Road in the Idemili South Local Government Area.
During a media briefing held on Wednesday at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters in Awka, Commandant Maku Olatunde detailed the operation that led to the arrests. This initiative was executed by the command's Mines and Steel Development Unit in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer in the state. The operation was prompted by credible intelligence regarding unregulated mining activities in the area.
On August 26, 2026, at approximately 2:07 PM, the team raided the site known locally as ‘Mmiri Obiaja’ or ‘mmiri mgbo’ Obiaja Nnobi, where they apprehended three suspects involved in the illegal mining. The individuals arrested include Patrick Anpue, aged 45, from Umuagu Village; Chidubem Ugammadu, aged 44, from Urumkpu Village; and Chukwuma Igwe, aged 47, from Umuanocha Village.
As part of the operation, the NSCDC recovered several items from the suspects, including two tippers identified by their registration numbers XA 653 GBZ and GDD 423 XB, along with six shovels and a wheelbarrow used for excavation purposes. Commandant Olatunde noted that the suspects confessed to conducting mining operations at the site without any legal documentation or authorization from the relevant authorities.
The NSCDC has emphasized its commitment to curbing unregulated mining practices and protecting the state’s mineral resources from exploitation. Olatunde warned that individuals and groups engaged in illegal mining activities should cease immediately or face legal consequences. He also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal mining activities to the NSCDC for prompt action.
The ongoing investigation into the matter will determine the next steps, including potential charges against the suspects in court. This operation highlights the NSCDC's dedication to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, reinforcing the importance of lawful practices in the mining sector.
