The Labour Party (LP) has experienced a significant surge in membership in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, with over 1,000 members from various political parties defecting to join its ranks. This mass defection, which included members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), took place in Orokam District on Wednesday.

The event reflects a broader trend of political realignment in Ogbadibo, which encompasses the districts of Orokam, Owukpa, and Otukpa, as the region gears up for the 2027 general elections. The defectors, which included political stakeholders and community leaders, were formally welcomed into the Labour Party during a ceremony attended by key party officials at both state and local levels.

Hon. E.E. Justice, a former House of Assembly aspirant from the ADC, spoke on behalf of the new members, citing the LP's commitment to inclusive leadership and grassroots participation as key reasons for their switch. He highlighted the influence of Hon. Philip Agbese, the current representative for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, in their decision to join the Labour Party. Agbese, known as Okanga 1 of Enone Kingdom, has been a pivotal figure in the party's activities and is seeking re-election in the upcoming elections.

During the ceremony, many defectors publicly discarded symbols of their former parties, symbolizing their commitment to the Labour Party. They were then presented with LP flags and membership materials, marking their official entry into the party.

The Benue State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Williams Ochonu Okefie, along with the Ogbadibo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Peter Enejor, welcomed the new members and assured them of equal opportunities within the party. Agbese echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the inclusion of new members is a sign of the LP's growing acceptance in the region. He encouraged the defectors to collaborate with existing members to fortify the party's grassroots presence, assuring them of a discrimination-free environment where all voices can contribute to the party's development.

As the Labour Party continues to expand its influence in Benue State, the recent influx of members from various political backgrounds underscores a shifting political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
